A Great Weekend in Ottawa
Mom and Dad came up to visit last weekend. The visit had a few purposes (besides seeing their wonderful daughter of course). With Mom and Dad going to Florida for February, this would be the last chance they would have to get to Ottawa this winter and Dad missed skating on the Canal last year so this year it had to happen. In addition, Jenn's grandfather had made her a beautiful headboard and they were going to bring it with them as well. It turns out that Jenn's grandfather taught at WCI and he and dad are acquaintances from years ago - small world once again.
I was able to get Mom and Dad booked in at the Chateau on Friends & Family so Mom was a happy lady and after a quick stop in to deliver the headboard, they headed to the Chateau to settle in on Friday night. Saturday brought a huge snowstorm to Ottawa (and most of Ontario) so we laid low for the most part. We went out to do some shopping at the trainyards (amazing outlet stores) and then played cards and relaxed at my condo for cocktail hour. Jenn prepared some appetizers and wine as a thank you for the headboard delivery and we taught her Dominos while we indulged. Then we finally got Dad to The Works for dinner - amazing as always!
Sunday morning was bright and sunny and it was perfect skating conditions! Dad and I walked down to the start of the open area of the Canal and had a good skate down a couple kilometres and back. You can't beat skating on the open ice like that - it really is worth the trip to Ottawa :)
We all headed out of Ottawa around noon Sunday for a (painfully long) drive home to Thamesford. Traffic was nightmarish due to a couple of accidents on the 401 that created large detours, but the company was terrific so the 9 hours flew by (well, that's an exaggeration but we all survived).
In Dad's words: "I can cross another item off my bucket list!"
