Country Night in Sarnia
Susan and, I headed to Sarnia last Saturday night for Bayfest 2011 Country Night! The performers this year were Lady Antebellum, Aaron Pritchett and Rodney Adkins - a pretty stellar lineup for $36.
Bayfest takes place in downtown Sarnia near the marina and last about 10 days with different concerts each night. The second weekend is dedicated to country groups and usually draws a huge crowd. The venue is outdoors and is set up in four quadrants - licensed general, unlicensed general, licened VIP and unlicensed VIP. Licensed means you can drink, VIP means you are in the front section. Having gone to Bayfest a few years ago, I know now to take the (cheaper) unlicensed general tickets (unless you want to drink, then do licened general) because the VIP section is like cattle packed into a pen at the front of the stage with people pushing and shoving you all over the place. And given the heat this year, you did not want to be touching anyone else.
So, we took the unlicensed general section and brought our lawn chairs and set up in the middle of the area with the other relaxed concert-goers and enjoyed the show. Aaron Pritchett started things off with about an hour of music. I've seen him before and love him and his music and he did not disappoint this time. The main event - Lady Antebellum went next. The guy-girl duo made up of Charles Kelley and Hilary Scott have won tons of awards this past year at the Grammys and CMAs. Hilary's grandmother had passed away on Thursday and they had cancelled their performance in the US on Friday night but still came to Bayfest but switched the order so that they were the second act rather than last so that she could get home. They were so great! They are a very talented duo and they really complement each other when they're on stage. Susan and I wondered if they were a couple but he's married to another girl and she's not married. After their show, Rodney Adkins was the final performer.
Besides the singers, there was lots of other amusement at Bayfest. First was the drunk girls and guys trying to get to the bathrooms... Oh my god, it was ridiculous. They would push through people's lawn chairs, walk in front of the crowd trying to see the show, complain, trip, slur their words... Then there was the country mamas as I like to call them. Those women who wear the tight jean shorts and pink tops, cowboy boots and hat and just live it up! Another trend I saw a lot of was supershort jean shorts with the pockets hanging below the bottom of the shorts... I thought pockets weren't supposed to show??? Am I just not cool enough to get the trend??? Needless to say we were pretty entertained between sets...
A great night with my big sista!
