Weekend in Boston
Mom and I spent another long weekend together and this time we headed to Boston. Since I was unable to make it earlier this summer, we thought we would try again. Mom's been to Boston a few times in her life but she likes the city and was happy to make another trip there.
We took the train down on Saturday to Toronto and then caught the direct Porter flight from Toronto Island airport to Boston. Porter really is a great airline - free booze, Starbucks coffee and good plane snacks!
We arrived later in the afternoon on Saturday so we checked into the Fairmont Copley Square (of course) which is located right next to the Hancock Tower (tallest building in Boston) and about two blocks from the Prudential Centre (second tallest building). The Boston Public Library was right across the street and we were surrounded by plenty of shopping and great restaurants.
The weekend was very relaxing. Mom and I got a 2-day pass for the hop-on hop-off trolley tour which included a harbour cruise and admission to a couple other sites. The trolleys really are the best way to see the city's main sites and also get a little history and hear other anecdotes from the drivers. Mom's lifelong friend Anne lives in Boston and she came and picked us up Sunday afternoon and we all went to the Art Gallery for lunch and culture. I loved sitting with the two of them at lunch and listening to the stories of their wild times as teenagers (Anne was Mom's "wild" friend... lol).
It wouldn't be a weekend with Mom without some great food and wine. Being that Boston is located on the water, we indulged in seafood as much as we could. Our favorite restaurant of the weekend was the Atlantic Fish Company. We went there Monday night and the place was hopping! We took a table in the bar area to avoid waiting and we had a super waitress and a great meal. The food and atmosphere were so lively and fun - I would recommmend it to couples, famillies, friends - it felt upscale but was reasonably priced and fit for kids.
Some other notable sites in Boston: the Cheers bar, Boston Commons, the Make Way for Ducklings ducks (story by Robert McClosky), the Freedom Trail, Fenway Park (home of the Red Sox), the USS Constitution, Harvard, MIT, and Faneuil Hall to name a few.
An awesome weekend with Mom!
