Bucking the Trend (typical Calgarians...)
My great friends Melanie and Pete (the same ones I stayed with out in Calgary) got married on Friday, July 30, 2010 at Langdon Hall in Kitchener. The wedding ceremony itself was done in front of only Mel and Pete's immediate family members followed by a dinner at Langdon Hall and the newlyweds stayed there overnight. Melanie has always been against the idea of a traditional wedding and the thought of being the center of attention and putting on a long white dress and walking up the aisle has never been something she's desired. Luckily, Pete felt the same way and despite the protests of a lot of friends and family, Mel and Pete did what they wanted to do (well almost, Mel did want to go to the courthouse but was able to be swayed to Langdon Hall and loved it). Melanie wore a red dress (seen in picture) and Peter a suit and they became officially married that evening!
Instead of a formal reception, Mel planned an Open House at her parents' place in Kitchener on Sunday, August 2 from 1 - 6pm. All of Mel and Pete's extended family and their many friends came to see the couple and help celebrate their marriage. Melanie and her family members and friends prepared most of the food and a few of us helped out making sure trays were filled and everything went smoothly during the day. No gifts were to be given, but cards were allowed and rather than signing a guest book, Mel had everyone write a message on cardstock paper that she can scrapbook with the wedding photos. There wasn't going to be a wedding cake, but our friend Diana offered to make one for them (with polka dots which sold Melanie on the idea) and it was pretty awesome!
Everyone had a great time, the weather was sunny and beautiful and Melanie and Peter were very happy with the outcome. They are now in Turkey for two weeks on a honeymoon planned by Peter!
Congratulations again Mel & Pete!
