Biking in Niagara-on-the-Lake
After getting a taste of the Niagara region on Canada Day weekend, I thought I would like to go back and take advantage of the cycing trails along the water. I enlisted Christine - one of my closest friends from university - who lives in Beamsville just outside Niagara in wine country. We started out early on Saturday morning and I picked her up on route to Niagara-on-the-Lake in Al's big Chevy truck. We parked in the town and then strapped on our helmets, took our route map and water and headed off along the water. The route we followed took us along the Lakeshore Road to Port Weller, then south to the Welland Canal and over the lock #1. There was actually a huge steam ship going through the lock at that time so we got to wait (rest) and watch the lock go up and this gigantic ship tottle through. We rode along the canal to Queenston Road (crossed back at lock #3), then headed west through St David's to Queenston. Finally, the last 10 km were north along the Niagara River and back to Niagara-on-the-Lake. The entire route was 45km! We were spent. We found where we had parked the truck (after some searching to be honest..) and then we ate our picnic lunch and wandered through the town for a little while before heading home. I got back to Thamesford around suppertime and pretty much laid flat out on the couch for the rest of the night. Susan came over for a game of Scrabble but that was about all I could manage :) It was a good tired - an awesome day with a great friend!
Niagara Falls
I clearly hadn't had enough of Niagara Falls yet because 5 days later, I was back! Work took me to Niagara Falls on July 14-15. This time, I was right in the heart of Niagara Falls - not Niagara-on-the-Lake and I was there to work so it was definitely less of a vacation. Luckily, I had some downtime at the end of the day and took a walk down by the Falls to see Canada's amazing wonder.
The falls really are an awesome site and the rainbow above and clear blue sky, it was pretty great. Of course about 10,000 other people also thought it was pretty great and the crowds were a little more than I like but that's Niagara Falls and I was in the Clifton Hill area so I asked for it.
While I was there, I made plans to have dinner with my dear friend Marg Alderson. We haven't seen each other in over a year but have kept in touch and always have a great chat when we're together - no lapse in conversation with us! It was great to catch up in person and have a couple hours to visit.
If you haven't been to Niagara Falls for a few years, I would suggest you go. There is so much to see and do there and if you're active, there's lots of outdoor activities, great kids activities and great places to wine and dine for the older crowd. A perfect place to staycation this summer!
